DAR ES SALAAM -- The African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) is a Pan-African Association of financial institutions that is involved in promoting provision of financial services to rural populations in Africa. AFRACA was founded in 1977 and registered under the Kenya NGO coordination Act in 1981. Its secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya with membership consisting of Central Banks, Commercial Banks, Agricultural Banks, Microfinance institutions (MFIs) and their networks. Currently AFRACA has 94 members spread across 27 African Countries.

In September - October 2008, AFRACA engaged Diligent Consulting Ltd to work with the AFRACA Secretariat to organise the 2008 Annual Technical Conference in Dar es Salaam. The task included organising the workshop and preparing and presenting a summary based on the four previous sub-regional workshops held between July 2007 & July 2008 in order to bring out key innovations and proposals for the way forward. Furthermore, the consultant from DCL, Professor Andrew E. Temu, facilitated and prepared the conference wrap-up report. He ultimately synthesised all the deliberations in the sub-regional workshops and those of the Technical Conference to produce the AFRACA Rural Finance series No. 5 with the Title: Innovations in Addressing Rural Finance Challenges in Africa.

In the first group, the participants primarily consisted of leaders at the cooperative level.  Dan walked them, step-by-step, through the project design constantly emphasizing the importance of selling the idea successfully.

The second group consisted of the National Advisory Group (NAG) for the ILO CoopAfrica Challenge Fund.  The focus of the workshop was on general evaluation skills but more importantly, on how a group of evaluators can jointly evaluate proposals in a fair, unbiased way.
